For Patients
Endocrinology is the subject encompassing hormonal diseases. You might have not enough of a hormone, or you might have excessive hormone production. Deficiency of a hormone can cause very difficult to diagnose symptoms, and make patients feel unwell in peculiar ways. If your GP thinks that your symptoms are due to a hormonal deficiency or excess then you need an endocrinologist.
The Imperial College Endocrine Unit is world famous, and looks after patients with hormonal problems. We have a team of physicians and surgeons with particular interest in pituitary disorders. There is also a dedicated set of doctors who look after patients with thyroid tumours and thyroid cancers and a set of doctors who look after parathyroid tumours.
The first stage is to work out which hormones are abnormal. If you are deficient in a hormone, then we can arrange for replacement of that hormone, which might be tablets or it might be injections. If you have an excess of a hormone, then we need to perform various types of scan to find out where the hormone is coming from, and either remove the source if it is a tumour, or give you an antidote.
